R Crumb LSD Blotter Art

Photobucket
You’re probably familiar with the art of celebrated underground cartoon artist Robert Crumb, who’s bizarrely bloated representations of society, has always found itself at end of a pitchfork from overly sensitive morality crusaders, through the decades. Sex figured prominently, drawing the ire of the feminists, while accusations of inherent racism would also get an airing from time to time; but Crumb’s work was always meant to be as challenging as it was slap-in-the-face funny.
Of course, Crumb busted out some of his best work in the heady days of the Hippie explosion, hunkering down at its epicentre in San Francisco, rubbing the shoulders and goosing the boobs of Janis Joplin and her Big Brother and the Holding Company. Crumb’s artwork for their ‘Cheap Thrills’ album is rightfully considered a classic, influencing generations of graphic artists over the unravelling decades.
Those days in SF would introduce Crumb to the mind-bending possibilities that LSD could offer an artist willing to throw open the doors of perception, and as he readily admits, acid became a driving influence. So if anybody is likely to appreciate the burgeoning Acid Blotter Art movement, you’d bet your last bottle of patchouli oil that R Crumb would be on board! Especially as some anonymous artist has transplanted Crumb’s famous sketch of Janis Joplin from the Cheap Thrills artwork on to swath of yellow blotter paper, just for shits and giggles.

This piece is one of many (often awful, always rudimentary, insanely priced, but none the less interesting) designs living over at www.blotterart.com . Why not turn on, tune in, drop out and take a look?

Free Deerhoof Download

Photobucket
Those unpredictable San Franciscan’s Deerhoof have covered Swiss band LiLiPUT for the soundtrack to a kids book called ‘Rules To Rock By’, which is a book created to inspire kids to form a band and is about a girl who is inspired to form a band.....by Deerhoof!
Anyway, the track’s called ‘Hitch Hike’, it’s very nice in a borderline shambolic folksy kinda-way, and, if you’re a genius, you can (apparently) get it free by heading HERE.

Supergrass Call It Quits

Photobucket

A very sad day in my life today as I heard that one of the hardest rocking bands of my beloved Brit Pop era have gone their separate ways. Supergrass existed amongst the working class poseurs and art school snobs with a freshness and humour that transcended the hollow body that the genre would eventually become. Their debut album 'I Should Coco' is up there with the greatest of British rock debuts, it's still as bombastically youthful today as it was over 10 years backwards.

It's a shame that subsequent albums failed to capture the wholehearted spirit of 'I Should Coco', although their recent efforts should combine to turbo-charge the tail-end of a pretty decent Greatest Hits.

Adios Supergrass, you charming bastards will be missed.

NY-Z: Jay Z Lets The Rivals In

Photobucket

“I’m all for collaborations, but it can’t be about money”.

Those words actually roll out of Hova’s straight face during the 15 minute short film ‘NY-Z’, which is produced by Absolut Vodka (a rival of Jigga’s Armadale Vodka brand), as part of their Absolut Concert Series, focusing on the Jigga Man’s September 11th show at Madison Square Garden in ’09.

If anybody else had said it, we’d be tearing strips of ‘em. But this is J, King of the Game. Part of his appeal is the ‘Business is Business’ attitude towards life, even if it’s selling your support to one of your rivals for $$$!

We’re not gonna tell you the film is any good, because it’s not. But Hova’s got too much game not to watch it all the way through to the credits. So jump to it.

WARNING: The following film contains some John Mayer!!!

The Rolling Stones Exhibition @ Scream London

Photobucket
From the 13th of May until the 3rd of July, the Scream London gallery will be hosting an exhibition of photos of The Rolling Stones from 1971, as legendary photographers David Montgomery, Roberto Rabanne and Bob Gruen independently caught the band during the recording of their ‘Sticky Fingers’ album.
Entitled ‘The Rolling Stones: Against The Wall’, the exhibition promises to deliver a behind the scenes portrait of the band as they broke through the swinging 60’s into the unknown and tumultuous 70’s. More details can be found at www.screamlondon.com
The above photo is not part of the exhibition, but is from the frankly FANTASTIC Diet Coke and Sympathy blog, which is dedicated to Marianne Faithfull and Anita Pallenberg, but also has some of the best rare pictures of The Stones and their like. Head over and check it out and let the lovely Leith know that you appreciate her labour of love!

Reggae’s Got Soul

Photobucket

Why don’t you do your jaded eyes a solid and click on over to www.hardformat.org and absorb a lovely little collection of reggae LP covers uploaded by Trojan Records art director Dave Hendley, who’s also written a rather pleasing/digestible number of paragraphs on his journey with the art of Rocksteady. Tuff!

Promoting The Porno: Adult Movie Posters of the 60’s & 70’s

Photobucket
The above poster for Wall Street Walker is one of an awesome collection of porno flick posters compiled in X-Rated: Adult Movie Posters of the 60’s & 70’s, by Tony Nourmand and Graham Marsh, curators at the Rare Poster Gallery in London.
As you can imagine, porno got a very limited theatrical run in 60/70, while those participating picture houses willing to take the risk of showing stag movies were less inclined to shamelessly promote the fact with a brash poster that would have passing grannies whipped in to a furore.
So it’s not surprising that the few posters that did make it off the printing press have become collector items.  Although the above book is now Sold Out, you could probably track it down on eBay if you were that way inclined. But for peek at some of the content, head over to www.xratedcollection.com and feast on the exquisite selection of posters for titles like Girls That Do, Divorcee, Debbie Does Dallas and Spread Eagles.
