Henry & Glenn Forever

Photobucket
‘Henry & Glenn Forever’ tells the story of these two notoriously sweet rock dudes, as they navigate the rocky waters of their domestic relationship and come to terms with the inconsiderate antics of Satanist neighbours Hall & Oats. Billed as a “love story to end all love stories”, the back cover even features a lovely quote from Rollins himself “Has Glenn seen this? Trust me, he would not be impressed”.
‘Henry & Glenn Forever’ is written by (the soon to be murdered) Tom Neely and published by the stellar people over at Microcosm Publishing, “a nonprofit, collectively-run publisher and distributor of zines and related work”. Seriously, these guys rock at rock bottom prices. Head over to their store and check out their zine catalogue.

Bands I Use Ta Like: Matty Boy Anderson

Photobucket

The above strip is the work of comic creator Matty Boy Anderson, who does this strip called ‘Mike The Pod’. What’s more interesting however, is his ‘Bands I Use Ta Like’ strip that used to get published in Stomp Magazine, where he’d trace out his love affair and subsequent ugly break-up with the bands of his youth. Each strip generally features a catalogue assassination along with the real reason we all fall out of love with our favourite bands, Douchebags start to like ‘em.

Click Here to see his scribbled autobiographical take on Abba, Anthrax, The Beatles, The Doors, L7, Skinny Puppy, REM, Neil Young and tons more.

Lynn Goldsmith Shot The Boss

Photobucket

Lynn Goldsmith is our hero! Not only is she a successful director, recording artist and a stone-cold fox, but she’s also captured some of the finest shots of the finest musicians in history. We’re not going to blow our trumpet about the finer details of Lynn’s career here as her photos speak for themselves; although you should head over to her site at www.lynngoldsmith.com to read up on her amazing career and buy some of her prints.

Here’s a series of shots that Lynn has taken of Bruce Springsteen over the years. Budding rock photographers, pay attention Goddammit!!!

Record Store Day: Best of the Sleeves

Photobucket
So it’s Record Store Day once again, and with even more high profile/low profile bands jumping on board to support the remaining independent outlets around the world by coaxing you in to your local store with the promise of limited edition releases, the sad truth is that by the time you read this, all the good stuff has been snapped up and is already on eBay. The idea is great but it needs to be administrated a little better. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy looking at what we’ll never be able to hear!
So Standard Love Affair has decided to bring you a gallery of the best artwork that Record Store Day has thrown up! This is dedicated to all those people who don’t need the incentive of a Blur 7” to visit their local record store.

R Crumb LSD Blotter Art

Photobucket
You’re probably familiar with the art of celebrated underground cartoon artist Robert Crumb, who’s bizarrely bloated representations of society, has always found itself at end of a pitchfork from overly sensitive morality crusaders, through the decades. Sex figured prominently, drawing the ire of the feminists, while accusations of inherent racism would also get an airing from time to time; but Crumb’s work was always meant to be as challenging as it was slap-in-the-face funny.
Of course, Crumb busted out some of his best work in the heady days of the Hippie explosion, hunkering down at its epicentre in San Francisco, rubbing the shoulders and goosing the boobs of Janis Joplin and her Big Brother and the Holding Company. Crumb’s artwork for their ‘Cheap Thrills’ album is rightfully considered a classic, influencing generations of graphic artists over the unravelling decades.
Those days in SF would introduce Crumb to the mind-bending possibilities that LSD could offer an artist willing to throw open the doors of perception, and as he readily admits, acid became a driving influence. So if anybody is likely to appreciate the burgeoning Acid Blotter Art movement, you’d bet your last bottle of patchouli oil that R Crumb would be on board! Especially as some anonymous artist has transplanted Crumb’s famous sketch of Janis Joplin from the Cheap Thrills artwork on to swath of yellow blotter paper, just for shits and giggles.

This piece is one of many (often awful, always rudimentary, insanely priced, but none the less interesting) designs living over at www.blotterart.com . Why not turn on, tune in, drop out and take a look?

Playboy Redux Exhibition at the Andy Warhol Museum

Photobucket

The Playboy Bunny is half a century old this year, and still looking as great as ever. 50 years back, in 1960, the first ever Playboy Club opened its doors in Chicago, Illinois. You’d have enjoyed it Buddy! Those pretty ladies with the rabbit ears, delivering your Tom Collins with a cheeky wink and a shake of that cotton tail. If you got really lucky, maybe sometime over the years you wandered in to the club at Union City, unwittingly soaking up the stage performance of a soon to be interstellar (and blonde) Deborah Harry. Yes, that’s her above; wasn’t she a doll?

There’s a celebration going on at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in honour of those who’ve worn the Bunny ears at one time or another over the last five decades. Curators Aaron Baker, Eric C. Shiner and Ned West have invited over 20 contemporary artists to reinterpret the iconic Bunnygirl for an exhibition go under the name of Playboy Redux: Contemporary Artists Interpret the Iconic Playboy Bunny.

Artists exhibiting include: Scott Anderson, Shag, Ain Cocke, Latoya Ruby Frazier, Chitra Ganesh, Ludovica Gioscia, Hiroki Otsuka, SEEN, O Zhang and Tim Biskup, who provided the wonderful diamond stained glass girl below.
The Exhibition runs until the 17th of June and for those of you lucky enough to be in the area, head over to WWW.WARHOL.ORG for the details.
