Playboy Redux Exhibition at the Andy Warhol Museum

Photobucket

The Playboy Bunny is half a century old this year, and still looking as great as ever. 50 years back, in 1960, the first ever Playboy Club opened its doors in Chicago, Illinois. You’d have enjoyed it Buddy! Those pretty ladies with the rabbit ears, delivering your Tom Collins with a cheeky wink and a shake of that cotton tail. If you got really lucky, maybe sometime over the years you wandered in to the club at Union City, unwittingly soaking up the stage performance of a soon to be interstellar (and blonde) Deborah Harry. Yes, that’s her above; wasn’t she a doll?

There’s a celebration going on at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in honour of those who’ve worn the Bunny ears at one time or another over the last five decades. Curators Aaron Baker, Eric C. Shiner and Ned West have invited over 20 contemporary artists to reinterpret the iconic Bunnygirl for an exhibition go under the name of Playboy Redux: Contemporary Artists Interpret the Iconic Playboy Bunny.

Artists exhibiting include: Scott Anderson, Shag, Ain Cocke, Latoya Ruby Frazier, Chitra Ganesh, Ludovica Gioscia, Hiroki Otsuka, SEEN, O Zhang and Tim Biskup, who provided the wonderful diamond stained glass girl below.
The Exhibition runs until the 17th of June and for those of you lucky enough to be in the area, head over to WWW.WARHOL.ORG for the details.

Refused Are Not Reforming / AC4 Will Have To Do

Photobucket

There have been serious pangs of excitement pulsing through the machine over the last few days, after somebody hinted at a possible Refused reformation on www.officialrefused.com . The site, which is really just a holding page, was embossed with “Coming Soon”, sending the Hardcore fraternity into a frenzy at the prospect of a return from Sweden’s finest.

www.buddyhead.com ran with it, as did many others, prompting former Refused frontman Denis Lyxzen to issue the following indirect statement “No, we are not reforming. Me and David are going on tour next week with our new Hardcore band Ac4 – sleeping on kids floors and playing doordeals, that seems to be more in line with what we deserve… haha”.

So, forget about the old New Noise and check out the new New Noise. As David said, his and David Sandstrom’s new hardcore band AC4 are booked on an old school tour through Europe this month. They’ve posted a pretty rough Youtube video of them playing on Denis’ lawn to a few friends in Mullsjö last June. Anybody expecting the progressive edge of Refused may be disappointed. It’s balls to the wall hardcore, your Mom wouldn’t approve.

WWW.MYSPACE.COM/AC4HC has the tour dates. Go watch!

April Fool Gone Shot The Prince of Soul: Today 1984

Photobucket
26 years ago today, while kids were planting whoopee cushions under their dads bottoms and flushing Cherrybombs down the staff toilets, Marvin Gaye Sr was pulling a trigger that would snuff out one of the finest talents bestowed on this rapidly burning earth.
Marvin Gaye died at the peak of his troubles, with a twisted road of brilliance and turmoil in his wake. By the time his womanizing, womanbeating, transvestite Minister father had snapped, Marvin had become a bizarrely paranoid, hollowed out crack addict. When the two troubled souls collided that night in the family home, with years of hurt and friction behind them, the hour had come for one of them. The day before his 45th birthday, Marvin Gaye took a bullet in the heart.
The story is as tragic as it is bizarre, thanks to the morally crippled character that Gaye Sr had become. This was reflected on the front cover of Time Out, London, Issue 781, which told the story of the slaughter. The cover see’s Marvin Gaye Sr, decked out in a woman’s negligee, diamond earrings and a beanie hat, shooting his son dead with (ironically) the very gun he had given him to protect his life with.
The cover was crass and cheap, but so was the 80’s. It’s a shame that The Prince of Soul wasn’t afforded a passing in decade that would have handled the tragedy of his death in a more respectful manner.
Today is the 26th Anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s death.
